Despite the cold weather and thin snow pack we are still installing helical piers during winter. Currently the frost depth is about 5″ around Homer and closer to 12″ in Anchorage. Until the frost gets below 24″ we can easily thaw the ground in just a matter of minutes, enabling us to install posts year round.
After we drill a small hole in the ground we use our proprietary heater to thaw the ground. Our heater is about 3000 watts and gets to about 900 degrees.
Once the ground is thawed we can install our helical piers for any structure. Below are a few shots of a deck foundation we completed for a local contractor in Homer just the other day.
